2013 IN REVIEW: NIGERIAN MUSIC

Let's look back at the moments and events in the Nigeria music industry. Indeed it was a good year. Some had fallen for others to rise. Many events occurred, but some are just hard to forget. Different artists have risen to fame and are doing real good. From the likes of KCee  to Burner boy, Chidinma, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, D’banj, Banky W., Timaya, Ice Prince,  etc., it has been hits upon hits. 

Here we bring you the top 15 biggest hits of 2013 from the Nigerian music industry. But before we do that, let’s look at the rise of international acts like Kendrick Lamar, who has much to remind us of our own MI, Mr. Incredible. Apart from body structure, Kendrick can be likened to MI in terms of charisma, confident use of words, lyrical prowess and great sense of humor. He has not only been winning awards, but he has also won the hearts of international fans as well as his fellow artists, being one of the most featured male new artists in recent time. Receiving an award in BET 2013 in which Nigerian own Ice Price won the African international category, Kendrick sent a message across to youths of the hood he came from. He said “if you are watching me now on TV, just know that you can do anything you set your heart on”.  On that Note, we proceed.

MVP INTERNATIONAL

 Like was mentioned in the above paragraph, Nigerian own Ice price was the overall winner of BET African internal category in which Tuface Idibia was also nominated. That is dope. For that we consider Ice Prince as the MVP of 2013, permit me to judge by the award, I will say in Africa as whole. He was a VIP on the airwaves with the same titled hit, Aboki remix and several features.

STREET ANTHEMS

      In the anthem category, Limpopo and Pull over by KCEE came, taking over the airwaves in the Nigerian music industry, putting behind anthems like Iyayan’s Kukukere.

       

      Eminado by Tiwa Savage ft. Don Jazzy was a song people fell in love with from the 1^st day of hearing. 

Go down Low by Olamide among other hits like Durosoke was ever present on the street.

   

 Wiskid  who miraculously escaped a car crash never relented in dropping  hits for the street even when he had few things to sort out with EME music, he was looking for Caro after warning that 20 men shall fall down if the cross his lane.

    

   OBO, omo baba olowo, Davido was on point with Skelewu after the massive Gobe hit.

 

.   Although Wande Coal was almost late with Da Kick and Rotate, yet he was able to establish a massive presence on the street. He got everybody rotating when they hear the kick.

   

 Tu baba may not have been able to throw a 2013 street hit, yet his presence  was never missing as Iheneme was relevant all through.

The Koko master, D’banj was never lost in the street hit making scene despite some restructuring here and there.  As we know, 2013 was a good one for Nigeria in the international foot ball finals as the Super Eagles won the Nations cup. D’banj was there. Ija nla. He hit the street with don’t tell me nonsense and finally.

   Even though Kukere remain a street anthem to beat by Iyanya, his was on the DJ’s wheels throughout 2013.

   

.   They no dey see me! Pyhno came to the street, he saw and he conquered by taking the street by surprise on Ghost mode.

  

   Hmm! Burna Boy kept his game tight no doubt and the street indeed felt him in 2013, dropping  Yawa dey towards the final quarters of the year.

.   Ever present on the street is the ginger man, Terry Gzus. He authoritatively stated that no one can do it better in what he does best. Dare and Run mad. Auch!  Towards the end of 2013, Terry G toured European countries with his ever gingered manager, Ozone of 03 Media.

   Some body once said he wanted to finish Timaya. Oops! Timaya was never finished even in 2013. His presence on the street ws never lacking, not when he was showing them boys Ukwu.

 Personally by P. Square stepped into the street and took over, simply put.

.   Chidnma was fairly on the street with Emini baller ft. Da Suspet and Ill-bliss.

EVOLUTION

Jesse Jagz’s exit from Chocolate city gave birth to his conscious style with the song Redemption, better expressed the video.  Watch out for Jesse Jags in 2014 as much is expected from the Jags Nation CEO.

   Orezi may have the need to complain like he did in the just concluded Headies award 2013 over loosing an award in a Reggae category to Waje. His song Make the buddiy bouce remind me of Goldie Harvey of blessed memory. She mimed the song, feeling proud of Orezi when the song was being aired in the BBA house. The Rehenna  crooner was about steeping into the street with a good song and video as 2013 counts down, having been around for a while.
