PRESS STATEMENT BY THE BETTER SOCIETY FOUNDATION (TBSF) ON THE 2019 GENERAL
ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA
NIGERIA SHALL IN A COUPLE OF DAYS WITNESS ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE IN HER POLITICAL DEVELOPMENT AND DEMOCRATIC PROCESS OF GOVERNANCE WHEN MILLIONS OF HER CITIZENS STEP OUT ONCE AGAIN TO EXERCISE THIER CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AT DETERMINING THOSE WHO SHALL GOVERN THEM FOR THE NEXT NUMBER OF YEARS.
THE BETTER SOCIETY FOUNDATION (TBSF) THEREFORE JOINS ALL WELL MEANING INDIVIDUALS AND SISTER CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS BOTH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL, IN WISHING OUR COUNTRY A VERY SUCCESSFUL, PEACEFUL AND HITCH-FREE ELECTIONS.
IN EXERCISING THEIR VOTING RIGHTS, WE ENCOURAGE NIGERIANS TO GO FOR THE BEST AMONG THE CANDIDATES/PARTIES WHO HAVE PRESENTED THEMSELVES FOR THEIR ENDORSEMENT REMINDING THEM THAT THEY HOLD THEIR VOTES IN TRUST SHOULD THEY DECIDE TO VOTE FOR THEM; AND SHALL NOT HESITATE TO RECALL THE MANDATE SHOULD THEY FAIL TO DELIVER CREDITABLY.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE REQUEST ALL ACCREDITED VOTERS TO ENSURE THAT THEY CAST THEIR VOTES AS REQUIRED BY LAW AND PROTECT THESE VOTES DILIGENTLY THROUGH COLLATION AND COUNTING.
VOTES ARE NOT SUBJECT TO SALE OR PURCHASE BY ANY INDIVIDUAL OR POLITICAL GROUP, THEREFORE, THERE SHOULD BE ‘NO VOTE SELLING OR BUYING’ IN ANY FORM OR MANNER.
THE BETTER SOCIETY FOUNDATION (TBSF) DEMANDS FROM THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC) UTMOST TRANSPARENCY OF THE ENTIRE ELECTION PROCESS; IN THE COLLATION, TRANSMISSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF RESULTS.
WE EQUALLY DEMAND THAT INEC GUARANTEE CREDIBLE, FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS.
POLITICAL PARTIES AND THEIR CANDIDATES MUST NECESSARILY PUT THE INTEREST OF THE COUNTRY THEY SEEK TO GOVERN OVER AND ABOVE INDIVIDUAL AND PARTY INTEREST; BE MAGNANIMOUS IN DEFEAT AND CHARITABLE IN VICTORY.
THE BROADCASTING CORPORATION OF NIGERIA (BON) SHOULD PROVIDE A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR ALL STAKEHOLDERS IN THE ELECTIONS IN TERMS OF NEWS COVERAGE AND REPORTAGE.
SECURITY AGENCIES SHOULD GUARANTEE SAFETY OF LIVES AND PROPERTY AND ENSURE THAT NIGERIANS WHO POSSESS THE PERMANENT VOTER’S CARD AND ARE QUALIFIED TO VOTE, DO SO WITHOUT FEAR OF INTIMIDATION AND HARRASMENT.
THE PERSONNEL OF ALL SECURITY SERVICES INVOLVED IN THE ELECTION PROCESS SHOULD REMAIN IMPARTIAL THROUGHOUT THE EXECRCISE.
THE ROLE OF RELIGIOUS LEADERS, TRADITIONAL RULERS, AND LEADERS OF THOUGHT CANNOT BE OVEREMPHASIZED AS WE JOURNEY THROUGH THIS DEMOCRATIC PROCESS. PEACE SHOULD BE THE WATCHWORD.
WE URGE THE FOURTH ESTATE OF THE REALM (THE PRESS) TO ENSURE FAIR AND CREDIBLE NEWS REPORTING WHILE WE ADMONISH ALL ARMS OF GOVERNMENT - THE EXECUTIVE, THE LEGISLATURE AND INDEED THE JUDICIARY, TO ENSURE THAT THE RULE OF LAW REMAINS SACROSANT.
WE CALL ON ALL SISTER CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS, ACCREDITED ELECTION OBSERVERS AND MONITORS TO CONTINUE TO DEMOSTRATE THE SPIRIT OF PATROTISM BY ENSURING THAT ALL FORCES DETERMINED TO TRUNCATE THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS GENERAL ELECTION AND INDEED IMPEDE THE POLITICAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF OUR DEAR NATION NIGERIA ARE STOPPED BY ALL LEGITIMATE MEANS.
FINALLY, THE BETTER SOCIETY FOUNDATION (TBSF) IN LINE WITH ITS GOALS SHALL CONTINUE TO STRIVE FOR THAT EGALITARIAN AND JUST SOCIETY WHICH WE ALL DREAM OF, MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE.
